Drowning In The Mainstream

Last night I went to the KOP movie theatre and I was appalled by what I saw there. There was a group of girls, maybe 8 or 9 years old, and there were dressed like little whores. They had their ugg boots, their mini skirts, their cell phones, and their makeup... and it made me want to cry.
When I was little, my parents would have had heart attacks if I had even tried to go out in public dressed like that. Yet these kids were un-chaperoned in a VERY crowded movie theatre, and they were dressed as such.
I know alot of people who agree with me that the Main Line is not healthy. Ugg boots, revealing clothes, the latest technology: everywhere you look people are parading around their wealth. And yet, look a little harder, and you can also see the single parents struggling to get by with dead and jobs and raise their families. The children who wear hand-me-down clothing, who don't have cell phones or ipods, and who don't drive expensive cars as soon as they get their permits. They don't shop at Abercrombie or American Eagle, yet they are the ones who are truly grateful for the little they have.

But it goes further than just the clothes and the technology, the Main Line is living with blinders on. Ever see those buggies in Amish Country? With the horses who wear blinders so that they can only see what is directly in front of them: that is the way that so many of us are living, with blinders on. We live in our mc-mansions, refusing to look at the rest of the world that lives in poverty and disappear.
We try to keep to our conservative values, pushing everyone who doesn't fit our Wisteria Lane criteria under the rugs, into the corners, pretending that they don't exist. AIDS, HUNGER, EQUALITY... its like we don't really care just because it doesn't effect our day to day lives. But that is such a lie: because it does.
One of the things that really bothers me with Stoga is our pathetic attempt at a GSA [sorry Mr. Husband, and all members of the GSA, its not you're fault. let me elaborate on what i mean]. In most of the classrooms there is a laminated sheet of paper that says something about equal opportunities for everyone regardless of gender, religion, race, sexual orientation..... YEAH RIGHT! Stoga is not a very friendly place for people who are different in any way from the masses. We have a GSA, but the only true event that we have to go along with it is the Day Of Silence [a silent protest of the horrible treatment that the LGBT community has faced, held on 4-18. The Day Of Silence is something I encourage EVERYONE to do. There will be more on this later, because of how strongly I feel about the misuse of this day by people who see it as a free ticket not to participate in classes for one day]. I know people involved with Radnor's GSA. They have a freaking Coming Out Week.
I find that wonderful, and I think to myself: why don't we have one? I'll tell you what I think: I think we don't have one because of the atmosphere of Stoga. The fact that we can't allow anything that doesn't fit in with our conservative views to exist. We have our blinders on. When I was a freshman we had a motivational speaker come in and talk to us. To be honest with you, I am one of those students that doesn't pay 100% [or even 50%] attention to what most of these people have to say. But this lady captured my attention, and I found myself hanging onto her every word. She was telling us the usual stuff about how we shouldn't let high school get us down, that when we fall off the horse, we have to get back on. But there was something more to her, something that made all of it so genuine. Towards the end of her speech, she talked about her she and her partner of however many years had finally been able to get married under Mass. State Law.
Well, all of a sudden the assembly was over.
A few days later all of the students got letters to take home to their parents. Letters from the school apologizing for allowing the speaker to talk to us about such things. The speaker has never returned to our school.
WHY? Because she told us about her partner.
Because she was gay.

Blinders. If we don't have to look at it, if its not there in front of us, if we can pretend it doesn't exist... than it doesn't.
I am highly offended by this. This woman was the only motivational speaker who has ever made me give a crap about what he/she is saying. And yet I know that the school will never bring her back. We won't allow her to pass into our vision span again. We've gotta keep her on the other side of our blinders.

I know at this point I'm rambling, and I deeply thank the people who have actually read up to this point. Because the issue of the Main Line is one that I am very passionate about [obviously].

I know that when I grow up, you won't find me living in the Main Line. I don't want to grow up and have a 6 year old daughter wearing clothing that looks like she should star in a porno. But maybe that's just part of my insanity.

I'd like to think that I don't live with blinders on, but I know this isn't true. I think we all have something that we repress from ourselves. Something that we just can't bear to deal with in our society. My challenge for you is to deal with it. To look it straight in the eye, to acknowledge that it exists.

I'm a Christian, but I'd like to call myself a "Christ-follower" because I don't agree with everything that the Christian Church preaches. I don't agree with the marks of Catholicism. I don't agree with many interpretations of Christian lifestyles. For me, its simple: GOD IS LOVE. [BIG FAT FUCKING PERIOD, is i think how i described the tiny dot at the end of that sentence to April] The Bible tells Christians to keep kosher, how many Christians do you know that do that? Well, right next to that, in pretty much the same part of the Bible, it condemns acts of homosexuality. Why than, is homosexuality on the forefront of religion/political wars in our country? Where are the concerned people who are fighting to keep the Christian population kosher? Do they exist?
Someone, sometime ago pick and chose which parts of the Bible the modern Church was going to stick with. But can you really do that? Times change, translations of the Bible change. Today, most Christians believe in the idea of the Trinity [a term used ZERO times in the Bible], yet is a fundamental part of Christianity. I'm not saying that the Trinity is wrong, for I, myself, am a follower of such ideas. I'm merely pointing out one of the instances of the way the Bible has changed with the changing times.

Homosexuality is not among the 7 deadly sins, but lust is. Gluttony. Greed. Sloth. Wrath. Envy. Pride. Now to me, those are all pillars of... [drum roll please:] THE MAIN LINE. ::gasp::

Whats my point? Who knows...
Are Uggs and miniskirts the end of the world? No
But I think that blinders are. To live in the world, I think that you should be aware of the world. THE WHOLE WORLD

the good
the bad
and the ugly

Its up to use to chose which categories we put different things into. I've only given you my opinions of where I think some things should fall.

Shiny Masochism, over and out!

YAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!! I completely agree with you!!!!!! And I am so appalled about the motivational speaker thing, with the school apologizing and everything! ERGH that is so ridiculous! But yaaay, the Main Line is indeed an evil-y isolated place, where people really need to look at the rest of the world.

I mean, we all complain about the tiniest thing, yet we have it soo lucky. [not saying that i don't do it 2, when i don't get something i really really wanted, but sometimes its just so horrifying to realize how tiny issues that seem so significant like technology or having the latest fashions can be]

I read your blog and I completely agree with you, Mainline indifference is a huge issue, primarily because it is simply easier to ignore a problem and defy all logic than to try and deal with it
Incidentally, when I tell people that I went vegetarian to reduce my carbon footprint they look at me like I have three heads, the mainline cannot fathom reducing their (over)consumption for any non-economic reason, even to save their own dying planet
And in addition it's clear that you don't win a lot of friends around here by championing change and suggesting that our time-honored (I say this sarcastically) conservatism (on a lot of issues) is a load of illogical nonsense that is designed to scare individuals into inaction and accept the flaws in the status quo

"for every piece of meat you don't eat, i'll eat 3" is the basic view of ppl who eat meat about those who don't

i, as a vegetarian, think that THAT view is utterly silly

I agree with you, people seem to think their lives suck when then have it pretty damn easy. It seems to prove that we are selfish.
Oh well, not like it'll change.

I completely agree. Just don't judge people because they wear Uggs or something. I wear them, and I'm not spoiled/closed minded. There's a lot more to [some] people than you might think!

I think your problem is that you're looking at the main line with your blinders on.

Well, all i can say is

that is your opionion, and you know mine

i wasn't trying to offend you with mine, but you obviously are trying to offend me with yours

i'm not trying to be a bitch here, you are.

stop, cause you've proved your point, the further you go... the more credit you lose

I didn't create this blog to attack anyone. And i didn't write this to offend anyone. But i can be a bitch about it if you push me, which is what you are doing, but in a childish and immature way.

I agree with a good bit of your argument, Sharon, but I think you're a bit over the top...

It's not that everyone has their blinders on. Blinders mean you don't even see anything else. And we see this kind of stuff on the news, hear about it in school (whether or not the admins try to censor it) and so on and so forth.

It's denial. A good bit like you said... tweaked.

It's not denial that it's there. It's a denial that it has any impact on the world. People know that a huge percentage of South Africa has AIDS. They've heard statistics about it in health, at assemblies, even, sometimes, in textbooks. But what they think isn't Well, it can't be real but instead That's probably an exaggerated statistic. I shouldn't have to worry about something that happens to a couple people. It isn't a real problem.

This is my opinion. Not a fact. I can't prove that's what anyone thinks. And I honestly think that some things are a problem myself and don't discuss them, and I can't rule that out as a possibility. But it's an idea.

Sharon said...

Thank you glen for pointing this out

OPINION

i refuse to get into a war about whose is right and whose is wrong

i ask that you just simply state what yours is, and if you agree or disagree with him

thats what i was looking for feedback, what others thought

not attacks on why i am wrong or whatever

/ april <3 i totally agree with YOU
ignorance..... uck ....

YOu have some very interesting thoughts.
I disagree especially with the blinders parents themselves wear, and the example they set for their children.
I am happy to have friends like you.
But I have a point, that I may later adress with you; I am afraid that people would see my participation in DoS as a sign that I condone that lifestyle. Which I do not, I merely oppose the abuse of those people.
And the speaker thing, I can't remember if she spoke to my class or not, i can sort of remember a lesbian person at one point speaking to my class?

Messo said...

Wow, most people already said what I would have said here. Young kids dressed like sluts does gross me out a lot, as does the fact that our school had to freaking apologize for having a lesbian speaker. People need to understand that there are people that are different than them-I don't understand why the school covers that up. Basically, stoga needs to grow up.

Sharon said...

Well put Messo!
[haha, im actually on my way out the door, but Ni, i will adress what you have said later today]

thank you all for the input!

Leah said...

Right on! OK, that's lame. But I feel lame today.

Sharon said...

Ni, its you're choice whether or not you do something like the DoS. I think its a shame that you would not out of fear of what others might think your believes are. But I can understand where you may be coming from.

Glen said...

DoS stands for Day of Silence, right?

Just clarifying...

And you shouldn't be afraid of what others think. Honestly, DoS is supposed to be for standing up for GLBT ridiculed in the public eye, not necessarily saying that you are one yourself. If someone doesn't understand that, then it's your right, your privilege, and maybe even your duty to explain that to them and why it means a lot not just to you but everyone else as well.

I know this is a bit hypocritical seeing as I haven't participated in it yet, but I kept forgetting about it, and I honestly feel sorry for not doing it.

Sharon said...

Haha, while doing my psych notes I have come across a couple terms of intrest:

confirmation bias: a tendncy to search for infomation that confirms one's preconceptions

fixation: the inability to see a problem from a new perspective...

I believe that these two terms are pretty much what I meant by my idea of "blinders". Its not that it's not there, and the people can see it. It's just that they over look it because it doesn't fit in with their believes.

Ello said...

Yeah, some of those comments are REALLY ignorant, I agree with April. And Gleniffer (unless this is a different Glen), you say that Sharon is a little over the top? In no way is she over the top, in my opinion. If you want over the top, look at MY blog (then again, some say that mine is WAY over the top). It makes everyone mad.

Again, YAY Sharon!

Hahaha, Ello,

"'for every piece of meat you don't eat, i'll eat 3' is the basic view of ppl who eat meat about those who don't"

No it isn't. That's pretty damn close-minded yourself, right there.

People are different. They'll have different views to you. It's not a Main Line thing. It's an everywhere thing. The thing that annoys me with such posts such as yours, is that you're being just as ridiculous and close-minded as 'they' are. Maybe having Ugg boots and fancy cellphones makes them happy. If it makes them happy and is doing no harm to anyone, what's so bad about that?

The school apologized for a gay speaker. Okay, not so hot. But, you know what, you have *no* idea what the school administration/school board go through. At least Conestoga has a GSA. At least there are some openly gay students/teachers.

It could be a lot worse. And because of the 'blinders' you're putting all your effort into, you're not seeing how much worse it could be.

tl;dr : Life sucks. Grow up.

Anonymous said...

well, for the most part, you have hit the nail on the head. in a lot of cases, there are people like this, and the main line is a large settling of them. ignorance and stupidity is pretty rampant in every way, shape, and form, almost anywhere you look. and by that i mean not just in the main line.

closemindedness is really infuriating and frustrating, but it exists in both conservative and liberal camps. only, i'm sure there are rich kids that are grateful for what they have, and i'm sure there are poor kids that are ungrateful for what they have. i'm sure there are plenty of kids who don't live on the main line and aren't rich who dress like total hoes. there are conservatives who hate all liberals and liberals who hate all conservatives. both of them are wrong.

oh hey i totally didn't know about the motivational speaker thing. no one tells me anything. that supremely sucks. anyway i'm pretty sure people will get over themselves, someday, and this whole racism/sexism/sexual orientation-ism deal will just die. until then i guess we're on our own and it's hard to get people around here to care.

the parts about christianity are some of the things that have been bothering me lately. a lot of stuff is outdated. again with the resisting change thing. but history shows that change is inevitable and invariably prevails, even after a lot of shit goes down.

everybody's got blinders. it's a fact of life. i consider myself vaguely blinder-free in some areas but i know there are so many things i will never truly understand, having never experienced them. you didn't do it here, and i've never heard you do it, but never talk to someone like you know what they've been through. chances are, you don't. you might get lucky, but prolly not. just my experience.

also, lawl. shiny masochist, what? i would tell you who wrote that but i think that violates some editor's code.

OK, so Christians already excused themselves from the kosher thing. But no one talks about the fact that the law in the bible against homosexuality (1) only applies to men, because it's sodomy and (2) need ed two witnesses to be tried, so the Sanhedrin (who rarely killed anyone anyway) pretty much never killed anyone for homosexuality.
